Mark your Summer Calendar for Summer Reading

“Dream Big—Read!” is this summer’s Summer Reading theme for the Hoboken Public Library. The program starts on July 5 and we will have an information meeting on Thurs., June 21 at 3:15 PM for children (and parents) who don’t hear about the program in school.

To participate in Summer Reading, children must be entering 1st grade through 5th grade in September, 2012. Children must be Hoboken residents and have their own library card. Library cards are free for Hoboken resident children. To get a card, children need to come to the library with mom or dad or their legal guardian (a babysitter does not qualify as a guardian), and have their parents’ proof of residence. A drivers’ license with a Hoboken address is best.

Kids’ will fill out an application and get an on-line identification and password. This year, we will let children log in from home to register their reading hours. The program is based on the number of hours that a child reads, not the number of books. This is done so that younger children don’t have the advantage because their books are shorter. Children will receive small prizes at 1, 5, 10, 15, and 20 hours. At 10 hours, children will receive a bracelet that admits them to a reading celebration on August 23 with ice cream from Ben and Jerry’s. After children reach 20 hours of reading, they enter the “Big Dreams” category and compete for larger prizes. The child who reads the most hours, this summer, will get a Color Nook (this is not a Nook Tablet with internet access, just to clarify). Other big prizes will be tickets to the Clearview Cinema, two tickets to the Intrepid Museum, books, totes, t-shirts, and trophies. The four children who log the most hours of reading will receive prizes.

We will have a kick-off program at the library with the Sciencetellers that combines science, storytelling, and just a bit of magic. This program is scheduled for July 6 at 11 AM. We will now be using the Eventbrite registration which can be found on the front page of the Hoboken website (http://hoboken.bccls.org/) and will issue you a ticket to present for the event.

Come to the library or call 201-420-2348 to register for Mrs. M.’s craft classes starting with a “Red, White and Blue” craft on June 27 at 2 pm. We sincerely ask that you do not register for a class if you don’t intend to come.

Stop by the Children’s Dept., or come to the information meeting for ”Dream Big – Read!” information.
