Hoboken Hawks RFC Flag Rugby

The Hoboken Hawks RFC is a youth rugby club (community program) established by Play Rugby USA to develop young people and the community in the Hoboken area, through rugby.

We will be introducing FLAG NON-CONTACT rugby, a game in which everyone gets to run, catch, tag, pass, and score! Players enjoy dashing down the field, side-stepping defenders, darting through gaps, and working with their new teammates to reach the try line and score a Try! Our curriculum and professional coaches focus first and foremost on positive youth development techniques while introducing the fundamental principles of rugby. I’m looking forward to coaching a couple of sessions myself!

The flag rugby program is open to all kids aged 6 - 14 years (8th grade) and will practice on Sundays 12pm - 2pm at Hoboken High School Football Field (see flyer attached for address). Some people have asked whether 4 and 5 year olds may participate - please feel free to bring them to the first session on March 22 and if we have at least 8 four and five year olds, we will run a little “RuggerTots” program for them also.

Please note, we’re aiming for 50% female participation - we will need your help to achieve this (don’t worry - the girls are amazing at this game)! Absolutely NO experience is necessary. The first two sessions: Sunday March 22 and March 29th - are completely free “Try Rugby” workshops for kids and parents to test it out. The season then formally kicks off April 12th and with practices through Sunday May 31st and culminating tournament June 6th (Randall’s Island, NYC).

For those who know they’d like to participate for the full season, additional information & registration can be found here.

We will likely cater for three age groups, with the older elementary school & middle school ages forming two teams to compete in Play Rugby USA’s NYC Rugby Cup on June 6th, which will be an incredible experience for all involved.

Thanks to the generosity of Bayonne Bombers and Chey Banks Properties  as program sponsors, this program will be offered free of charge to all students enrolled in Hoboken public schools. Donations are welcome for any parents with public school-enrolled students who would like to support. Play Rugby USA, is a registered 501c3 non profit organization, so any donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent permissible by law. Registration for non-Hoboken-public school students is only $195 which includes 20 hours of professional coaching, an awesome Hoboken Hawks RFC rugby jersey and free entry (for the two teams) into the NYC Rugby Cup (at which attendees receive another jersey).
