The Hudson County Improvement Authority’s (HCIA) Annual Earth Day celebration will kick off at 10 am in the South Field and inside the Historic CRRNJ Terminal at Liberty State Park on Saturday, April 21, with a 5K Run and the 5K Walk for Liberty sponsored by the Friends of Liberty State Park. With magnificent views of the New York City skyline, this day-long event provides an excellent opportunity to learn more about the environment and create a memorable experience for your family.
The theme for this year’s celebration is "Living the 'Green' Life." We are focusing on the home and how we can make our homes and neighborhoods "greener" as part of the national theme of "A Billion Acts of Green" and is a continuation of the 2010 - 2011 theme. All attendees are invited to make a pledge to do one "Act of Green" in or around their own home.
"We want our kids to get out there and enjoy all the beauty that Hudson County has to offer," says County Executive Tom DeGise. "Celebrating Earth Day in Liberty State Park is an excellent way to help get our kids back-to-nature; all while learning how to protect our unique environment. With all the free crafts, giveaways and activities for the kids, it is a nice way for parents to relax and enjoy the outdoors as well."
Adults will be able to register for the Race/Walk on Saturday, April 21, at Liberty State Park from 7:30 to 9:30 am. Race registrants will receive tee-shirts and a chance to earn trophies and medals. The cost of the race is $20 if registration is postmarked by 4/14/12 and $24 on race day. CLICK HERE FOR REGISTRATION FORM
Following the 5K Run/Walk, there will be plenty of family-friendly activities to be found. From 10 am to 4 pm, a "Kids' Kingdom" area will include environment-themed displays, information on services available throughout ‘Our Hudson Home', tree seedlings (compliments of the NJDEP's Division of Parks and Forestry). In addition, there will be many other giveaways and interactive entertainment, such as inflatable rides, arts and crafts activities, kite-flying and contests – including our new "Eco-Olympics". There will be entertainment on stage throughout the day as well as strolling entertainers who will mix and mingle with the crowds.
