Benjamin Roman, watercolor

Stop by this weekend on the citywide 3rd Sunday Gallery Walk to see the series of Benjamin Roman's watercolor portraits of children in the Upper Gallery of the Museum in an exhibit titled, "Portraits of Childhood." The Museum also invites the public to an artist's talk on June 9 at 4 p.m., after our Spring Family Fun Day, 12 - 3:30 pm

Roman has been an art teacher for kindergarten, pre-K and pre-school children in area schools for the past 16 years. He now teaches at Beyond Basic Learning, in Hoboken, and paints at least three or four times a week.

As a teacher, he finds children a fascinating subject matter, but he also paints portraits of adults, and landscapes. He's fascinated with the challenge of depicting in his subjects' expressions the essence of what it means to be young and innocent. "To capture the warmth and heart revealed in a child's face is my ultimate goal."

The Hoboken Nine Vintage Base Ball Club
The Hoboken Nine play the Phil. Athletics Sunday at 12pm

Hoboken's baseball tradition lives on in the Hoboken Nine, who play in the Vintage Base Ball League by mid-19th century rules. The Hoboken Nine, sporting brand-new uniforms, are in their second season. Their next game is on Sunday, May 19, at 12 pm & 1:30 pm, a doubleheader against the Philadelphia Athletics at Fairmont Park in Philadelphia, PA. Click here or on the image for details.

In their rookie season last year, the Hoboken Nine played nearly a dozen games, and caught many of the more established teams off-guard, concluding with a winning record. The 2013 season is packed with games, nearly every Saturday this summer, against other teams in the Mid-Atlantic Vintage League through November 2. Visit the team's website at hobokennine.jimdo.com for details and photos.

Hoboken's Elysian Fields hosted one of the first officially recorded, organized "base ball" game on June 19, 1846, when the New York Nine defeated the Knickerbockers, playing by rules drawn up by the father of modern baseball, Knickerbocker captain Alexander Joy Cartwright Jr. On Saturday, June 15, the Museum invites the entire community to a special re-creation of this historic game at Stevens Dobbelaar Baseball Diamond, pitting the Nine against the Flemington Neshanock.
