On Saturday, June 18 at 1 pm, the Hoboken Historical Museum and the City of Hoboken are joining forces to commemorate the famous 1846 baseball game played on Hoboken's Elysian Fields (June 19, 1846). Vintage baseball expert Brad Shaw and his Flemington Neshanock club will visit Stevens Dobbelaar Baseball Field (DeBaun Athletic Complex at 8th Street and Castle Point Drive) for a competitive game against the all-volunteer "Hoboken Nine" using 1860s rules.
The teams will play in vintage-style uniforms and use mid-19th century rules. Unlike modern baseball, pitchers pitch underhanded; batters can call for a high or low pitch; fielders can catch foul balls after a bounce for an out; and everyone plays barehanded – no gloves. Fortunately, the ball is softer than the modern version.
The event is free. There will be balloons, hotdogs, and souvenir t-shirts. Volunteers needed! To help out, call the Museum at 201-656-2240.
