Sports, Dance and “Movement” History
What role did athletics play in our city’s history? What kinds of sports and games were popular? How did our parks and recreation programs get started? What have some famous sports figures (male and female) accomplished in Hoboken? By investigating different types of aerobic and anaerobic activities (e.g., dance, yoga, sports), campers will not only learn about Hoboken’s movement history but also participate in it! Arts, crafts, music, drama, field trips, and outdoor play will round out their days.
Session 2 Dates: August 1 – 5: 9-12 year olds (First time ever!)
Hoboken History through Art and Photography
Campers will explore the lives and contributions of outstanding painters, sculptors, and photographers who were born, or who worked, in Hoboken during the past 150 years. They will analyze artistic styles and techniques so that they may apply that knowledge to personal art projects. Campers will also learn about important aspects of Hoboken history through the work of artists of the past. During field trips, campers will photograph important sites to make a visual history of the city. They will also meet contemporary creative individuals. Campers will also play outdoors, enjoying games and sports. This session, geared to older children (ages 9-12), will incorporate greater focus and depth to camp activities.
Session 3 Dates: August 22 – 26: 5-8 year olds
Going Green in Hoboken
How have we historically taken care of the environment in Hoboken? What are some of our current efforts? Campers will explore issues like garden clubs, the Farmer’s Market, bike ride-sharing, composting, recycling, the Hudson River, and energy-saving efforts by individuals and organizations. Campers will engage in hands-on, interactive, fun activities related to these topics, go on field trips and design a project to help Hoboken stay beautiful, clean and green. They will play games and sports outside the museum, take local field trips and do arts/crafts projects.
