Guided Tours of Historic Neighborhoods with the Hudson County History Advocates

Celebrate Hudson County’s 175th Anniversary on Guided Tours of Historic Neighborhoods with the Hudson County History Advocates

The Hoboken Historical Museum, in partnership with the Hudson County History Advocates, have created a series of walking and bus tours of historic areas and neighborhoods in celebration of Hudson County's 175th anniversary. Tours cost $10 per person, and are limited to 24 participants. Reservations can be made through the Hoboken Museum website, www.hobokenmuseum.org.

Members of the Hudson County History Advocates include: Bayonne Historical Society, Friends of the Loews, Historic Preservation Network, Hoboken Historical Museum, Hudson County Genealogical & Historical Society, Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy, Jersey City Parks Coalition, and the New Jersey Civil War Heritage Association.

Funding has been provided in part by Hudson County Division of Cultural & Heritage Affairs/Tourism Development, Thomas A. DeGise, Hudson County Executive & the Hudson County Board of Chosen Freeholders. Lafayette History Tour

Location: Meet at the bandstand in the Rev. Dr. Ercel F. Webb Park (formerly Lafayette Park), off Van Horne between Lafayette St. and Johnston Ave.

Presented by the Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy, historians Dr. Jenny Furlong and Dr. Rebecca Shapiro will lead an exploration of Jersey City's oldest neighborhood, starting from the Ercel F. Webb Park, formerly known as Lafayette Park, and stopping at the Dr. Lena Edwards House, the Erminnie Smith House, The Provident Bank, American Type Foundry, and St. Mary's Greek Byzantine Rite Church, among many other historic sites.

A Walking Tour of Bayview - New York Cemetery

Location: Meet at the main gate of Bayview, on Garfield Ave.

The second tour is led by historian Dennis Doran of the Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy and presented by the Hudson County Genealogical & Historical Society. From former New Jersey Governor A. Harry Moore to former Jersey City Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham, Bayview Cemetery is the final resting place for many prominent and everyday former residents of Hudson County, including leaders of business, industry and finance. This tour will reveal many surprising stories of this cemetery. Meet at the main entry gate on Garfield Avenue, on the west side. There is a maintenance building there. Limited parking is available along the west side of Garfield Ave. and within the cemetery. The Danforth Avenue station of Hudson Bergen Light Rail Station is near by.

A Walk Along the Harsimus Branch Embankment

The fourth tour is led by Bob Foster, director of the Hoboken Museum and part of the "Extraordinary Stevens Family" lecture series. The tour includes a visit by bus to the Hoboken Cemetery, on Tonnelle Ave in North Bergen, where many members of the Stevens family are buried.

Meet at the Hoboken Museum. Some street parking and up to three hours of validated parking in the Littleman garage on the corner of 12th Street and Shipyard Lane are available. The Museum is also easily accessible by public transportation; visit www.hobokenmuseum.org for details.

"On the Waterfront" Bus Tour

Location: Hoboken Historical Museum, 1301 Hudson St., Hoboken

The fifth tour is led by Lenny Luizzi, a film industry expert and former trustee of the Hoboken Historical Museum. This bus tour will highlight the large role Hoboken played in this iconic American film, including the famous edit that takes Marlon Brando and Eva Marie Saint from Church Square Park to Elysian Park in an instant. Seating is limited.

About the Hudson County History Advocates
Begun in 2010, the mission of the History Advocates is to increase public awareness about the rich and diverse heritage of the county and its municipalities. It also hopes to promote Hudson County as a historic and educational destination to learn about its local, state and national significance.  Through events like the History Fair its goal is to bring together local historic and civic organizations to share and exhibit their accomplishments at the time of New Jersey's 350th anniversary. About the Hoboken Historical Museum
Founded in 1986, the Museum’s mission is to educate the public about Hoboken’s history, diverse culture, architecture and historic landmarks by collecting and interpreting artifacts and oral histories. In 2001, the Museum moved into one of the oldest buildings on the waterfront, in the former Bethlehem Steel shipyard, at 1301 Hudson St., Hoboken, where it maintains a series of rotating exhibits. The Museum is open six days a week, 2 – 7 pm on Tues. – Thurs., 1 – 5 pm on Fridays, and noon – 5 pm on weekends. Admission is $3.
