RENT comes to Hoboken High School

The Hoboken High School Theater Department continues to wow audiences with performances that can rival even the best off-Broadway shows. This weekend catch the popular show Rent.

The play stars a group of young people who are trying to find their place in the world. Rent is about forming a community of people that you trust and who can help you better understand yourself as an individual. These characters are looking for that "connection in an isolated age." Based on "La Boheme," the Opera by Giacomo Puccini, Larson took the idea of being a struggling artist and used this concept to write about his own struggles with life and love. The show is great for the teens in your family.

"RENT is about accepting each person's differences through love; and that it does not matter how long you are on Earth but what you do with your time while you are here that matters most," says director and HHS theater teacher, Danielle Miller. "It was not just the appeal of this message, however, that attracted the kids, but how closely many of the characters and their struggles mirrored those of the students in our high school," says Miller. Show times are: Friday, Feb. 8 at 7 PM, Saturday, Feb. 8 with shows at 2 PM and 7 PM and Sunday, Feb. 10 at 2 PM.

Ticket sales are $7 for general admission; $5 for students and $3 for seniors. Or take advantage of a new family pack for performers:  the $15 family pack is available for parents and siblings of performers. Each member pays $15.00 to attend all four shows and these tickets must be purchased in advance.

Miller is also directing the efforts of Hoboken's second district-wide show with Seussical, a show based on the works of 15 of Dr. Seuss's books. Many of his characters have never met before, but in this musical they come together and help each other while traveling through the Jungle of Nool. This magical musical is themed around the idea of helping out others that are in need, all while pursing an active imagination. Auditions will take place the first week of March. Flyers will be distributed to all elementary schools in the district in February. All students in grades K-12 are welcome to participate.

Show times and dates are Friday, May 3 at 7 PM, Saturday May 4 at 7 PM and Sunday May 5 at 2 PM. For more information contact Danielle Miller Theatre Teacher/Director 201-356-3700 x7210 danielle.miller@nullhoboken.k12.nj.us.
